Spanish Class
About Our Progrm
Kumeyaay participates in a Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) program. The lessons are designed as an introduction to Spanish using a systematic and sequential developmental program focusing on listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture. Students are instructed through the use of literature, poetry, music, art, and games. An emphasis is placed upon making learning meaningful to the students and to develop an attitude of enthusiasm and joy in learning.
The program’s lessons cover a wide gamut of topics. Beginning in kindergarten, the children are introduced to skills such as basic commands and greetings, body parts, and the fundamentals of counting and calendar use. These skills are built upon throughout the grade levels with a focus on listening for comprehension, reading and writing in Spanish, cultural awareness, and the more advanced concepts of vocabulary usage.
All Kindergarten through fifth grade students participate in 60 minutes of Spanish classroom instruction per week.
During Spanish class students also have instructional activities which spotlight the cultures of Spanish speaking countries throughout the world with a specific emphasis on music, dance, storytelling, holidays, art, and history. Students gain perspectives of our global society and a respect for other traditions and ways of life.
